Access can be monitored directly from Midstate's Command Center or by internal security personnel.

Keyless Entry Systems Are a “Win/Win” for Landlords & Tenants

“Access Control,” “Keyless Entry,” “Key-Pad,” “Card Accesses Control”: what do all these terms mean? And how do they apply to the average home or business owner? The traditional lock and key method dates back 4,000 years. If it has worked all this time, is it necessary to make changes? After reviewing the exciting innovations in access control technology, it becomes clear that for both convenience and security, it is time to let go of tradition.

“Access Control” is a term that comes up more and more frequently for homeowners, business owners, and building owners. The term may by relatively new, but the concept is as old as the first door. Access control simply means a way of limiting entrance into a given space.

For years, this access control was achieved through a traditional lock and key approach. In the last decade or so, there has been a proliferation of keyless entry systems. Originally, we saw these most commonly in the “disposable” hotel room cards at one end of the spectrum and high-tech security systems in commercial and industrial facilities at the other end. Recently, this technology has become easily available for anyone, and the public is embracing this opportunity.

Keyless entry access control systems offer a wide range of benefits. The most obvious is that with keyless entry, we will never again have to spend time searching for misplaced keys or fumbling to get the key in the lock while standing outside in the dark. Also, there are many keyless entry systems that accept time-limited codes. This means that if you have guests or a worker in your home, you can allow them an access code that will cease to work after a given time period. On top of that, keyless access systems offer heightened security because key codes or key cards can be changed with less money and less work than locks and keys. Rekeying a lock costs about $100.00; with keyless entry, “rekeying” only costs about $1.50.

Although keyless access control systems are convenient for private residences, they serve an even greater use for owners of multi-unit dwellings and offices. First, as the landlord of the building, you would never have to hire a locksmith again. When an old tenant moves out, simply change the key card or key code and you are ready to rent the dwelling to a new tenant. The savings of time and money are astounding. If you have a furnace room or utility area where you will need to allow access to workers for a period of time, you can give them the code while they are in your employ, but change it again after their service with you is complete. If your building offers a common area like a laundry facility or social area for multiple tenants or employees, you do not need to furnish each person with a separate key, and you do not need to rekey the lock when someone vacates the building.

Keyless entry systems also offer a multitude of advantages to the tenants of the building. They eliminate the hassle of having to make extra keys for every adult and child living in the unit. Also, when people have guests staying with them, they do not need to search for that perpetually lost extra set of house keys. Most important of all, keyless entry offers security that surpasses lock and key systems. These all make great selling points when showing a potential tenant your facility. By making their lives easier and safer you are giving them additional reasons to rent from you.

Today's keyless entry access control systems offer many different features and designs. It is worth your time to talk to an expert about the options available so you can match the proper system with your specific needs. The question is not whether or not to go keyless, but rather which keyless system is perfect for you.
